About custom made paddles from MaxPaddles
Hi, my name is Max Love, the owner and craftsman of all the custom made paddles at MaxPaddles.
My mum reckons that I was born with a hammer in one hand and a wood plane in the other hand, so it’s little surprise that I’ve made my living working with timber.
My first job was working for my dad in his timber joinery workshop, where he taught me old-school craftsmanship. Since then, I’ve worked as a carpenter, joiner and woodcrafter most of my life.
Working with wood isn’t just my profession; it’s also my hobby. I’ve handmade two timber kayaks, which are now well known around the beautiful Bay of Islands here in New Zealand.

With my love for both timber and kayaking, exploring the world of the Greenland paddle was a natural next step.
Having researched the design of these paddles – and testing them for myself – I spent countless hours fine-tuning my paddle until it was absolutely perfect.
I’ve since crafted custom made paddles for a number of people – you can read their experiences here.
I now make custom made paddles full-time. I simply love handcrafting a Greenland paddle specifically to suit each individual. It’s a real pleasure to carve and shape a beautiful piece of cedar timber – and know that it’ll make a real difference in the life of its owner.
On the occasions I’ve been able to deliver one of my custom made paddles to a customer in person, the reaction when they hold it for the first time is always the same: “wow!” … and that’s immensely rewarding.
Whether you get joy from using your new Greenland paddle on the water – or enjoy admiring it hanging on the wall when it’s not in use – the main thing is that you get great pleasure from it!
Happy paddling,
